Judges Making Law: How Activism Corrupted the US Courts

Australia, like the United States, has three separate but co-equal branches of government; the legislature, executive and judiciary. Though the finer details differ greatly between our countries, the fundamental purpose is to provide interlocking systems of accountability that prevent abuses of power.

Accountability through the judiciary arises only when it is independent. Australia safeguards independence robustly through non-partisan appointment processes and a strong culture of keeping the judiciary free of politics. This has produced a judiciary that for decades was the most conservative in the common law world, deferring to the will of the elected legislature so as not to legislate from the bench while still enforcing constitutional red lines.

However, as we learnt at CPAC, things are very different in the United States. For decades, there has been constant partisan warfare over who occupies the benches. While traditional conservative judges always sought to keep the judiciary within its constitutional limits, the development of the judiciary in the United States has seen the birth of judicial activism as leftists sought to use the courts as a vessel to achieve their political goals. Unlike Australia, the United States has few safeguards against partisan infiltration of the courts. For the Supreme Court, contentious public confirmation hearings air the dirty laundry of potential justices and allow politicians to make personal and partisan attacks unrelated to judicial work.

The consequences of judicial activism have been dire. Roe v Wade is correctly considered the high water mark of judicial activism in the United States. In Roe , seven justices extraordinarily overturned a Texas law criminalising abortion without any textual constitutional basis. Instead, they meekly claimed the constitutional right to privacy enshrined abortion in the constitution. This is a product of activism because the judges in Roe sought a political and moral outcome rather than interpreting the law and leaving the politics to the elected legislature and executive. Even ardently activist judges like Ruth Bader Ginsburg criticised Roe as being on extraordinarily shaky ground.

Justice Ginsburg’s criticism proved prescient as Roe was eventually overturned by Dobbs v Jackson in 2022. At CPAC I spoke with some of the lawyers and organisations involved in overturning Roe who explained how it took decades for the Supreme Court to have enough conservative justices who would hear the case and that President Trump’s judicial appointments were decisive in Dobbs . The differing judicial styles in Dobbs’ judgment are telling. The conservative justices undertook a deep historical and textual analysis of the Constitution to understand the correct application of the law. The activist justices in the minority instead bemoan the material consequences and hark on about morality rather than the law.

Australia cannot rest easy on its comparatively good judicial outcomes compared to the United States. Our High Court has seen a significant activist shift since the 70s culminating in the Tasmanian Dam Case . There, the Court allowed the Federal government to stop Tasmania from damming the Franklin River on the basis that an international treaty Australia signed prohibited the dam. There is no constitutional provision for the Federal government relating at all to dams. Instead, the Court created a loophole for any treaty of any subject-matter to totally override the States essentially allowing foreign nations to dictate Australian policy. Unlike Roe , Tasmanian Dam is still alive and well and succeeded by a string of cases continuously expanding Federal power. The United States has shown the dark path this can take us down, but also that activist cases are on shaky ground if only we had the right judges.

From Dallas to Canberra: The Unity Lesson the Australian Right Can't Afford to Ignore

The message coming from the CPAC stage was consistent - unite.

Not conform, this is the movement of free speech after all, but recognise that fighting each other only hands victory to our opponents.

With the 2026 US Midterms fast approaching, the Republican Party and its supporters need to be match-fit to keep control of Congress.

However, parts of the MAGA and conservative movements have slipped into bitter infighting.

This stems from differing opinions on the administration's decisions, like the Iran conflict, but also a very personal fight between leading online influencers in the conservative sphere.

Some of that infighting was on display on the main stage. Josh Hammer essentially made it the topic of his speech, taking swipes at Matt Gaetz and other parts of the right.

However, far more speakers focused on unity. Matt Gaetz being one of them

He took issue with a number of fellow conservatives but finished it by saying this: “I would walk across hot coals with them arm in arm to stop the Democrats”.

A key message from Matt and Mercedes Schlapp when opening the CPAC conference was on the need for the broad base of conservatives to unite and work together for the Midterms.

Michael Knowles and Matt Schlapp hosted a session called “Can’t We all Just Get Along”. They discussed the importance of celebrating the wins the right have accomplished and recognising that the threat against them is too great. That this moment is do or die.

The stakes for the upcoming Midterms are high.

The Republicans losing would create a massive legislative and political barrier for the Trump administration. There’s no doubt that the Democrats will begin their campaign of impeachments. This would cripple the continual achievements of the President.

Ultimately, the message was to recognise that the political enemy is not those inside the tent but those outside.

The right in Australia faces a similar situation.

The long line of political parties that sit on the right are all fighting each other, fighting over the same voters and letting the real ideological opponents get away unchecked.

The recent South Australian state election was a demonstration of this. The focus of right-wing parties was largely directed toward seats already held by non-Labor parties, all while SA Labor won its highest number of seats in its history. This was a spectacular failure for the conservative cause.

Each of the parties has its own approach to politics and attracts its own supporters, but failing to match the discipline of the left will see our cause lose time and time again.

On the first day of the conference, CPAC Australia's own Andrew Cooper made a very important point by saying: “The only way to change the policy is to change the government”.

CPAC may well provide the forum in Australia for achieving that unity, advancing our conservative values in government and our way of life.

From the Bush Library to Bondi: A Wake-Up Call for Australian Pride

From the sports games, passionate performances of the national anthem, or frequent sightings of the American flag hoisted in the sky, it has so far been highlighted how Americans, more specifically Texans, love their country. Even amongst diversity in age, race, or gender, it is evident how the patriotic spirit is at the core of American culture. The George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum is yet another testament to America’s national pride, with the building being dedicated to capturing important historical events throughout President Bush’s term [2001-2009], the accomplishments of his Government, and the political environment of the early 21st century. Additionally, the museum provides an exact replica of the Oval Office, with furnishings and decor reflecting those displayed during the President’s term. Outdoors, the Texas Rose Garden, which is a third of the size of the White House Rose Garden, holds the future burial place for Mr and Mrs Bush.

In regards to historical events throughout President Bush’s term, the most significant of these would be 9/11. A large portion of the museum was dedicated to showcasing the tragedy, and I found it to be the most impactful segment of the museum. The display included an expansive wall with the names of every victim, several videos showing the horrific destruction, and quotes from last phone calls made from the plane. The various pieces came together to also show the unity amongst the American people following the terrorist attack, and President Bush’s determined response: “I am a loving guy, and I am also someone, however, who has got a job to do. And I intend to do it.”

Nearly 25 years following 9/11, the Islamic terrorist attack on Bondi Beach in December 2025 was a wake-up call to Australians as to the persistence of Islamic extremism, and more urgently, the fact that this ideology is encroaching on home soil. This leads us to consider what actions must be taken to not only stop importing this extremism, but also, how we must go forward to eradicate what has already been established.

It is additionally notable how the George W. Bush Presidential Library is located on the Southern Methodist University campus, as this showcasing of critical American history is easily accessible to college students. Interestingly, Australia has several Prime Ministerial libraries that are all located on University campuses, yet, there does not appear to be a comparable knowledge of Australian history amongst university students, and more pressingly, a comparable sense of pride for the country. It must be determined how to encourage a similar spirit of national pride amongst young Australians, which would begin with dismantling the continuous message of Australian self-hatred that is preached in our modern educational institutions. Overall, we must reform our culture and systems to rather celebrate our achievements and history, and as a result of heightened pride for the nation, young Australians will be emboldened to fight for a prosperous future.

The Weight of History: What the Sixth Floor Museum Says About Today's Political Climate

Standing inside The Sixth Floor Museum you experience the weight of history rather than only learning about it. Observing the precise route where John F. Kennedy was killed, I was struck not only by the tragedy but also by what it symbolises: a time when political separation became irreversible.

It’s easy to think of 1963 as distant, something confined to textbooks and documentaries. But standing there, it becomes clear that the forces behind that moment of division, anger, and ideological conflict haven’t disappeared. If anything, they’ve intensified. Walking through the exhibits, I couldn’t help but draw parallels to today’s political climate.

In the United States, figures like the late Charlie Kirk have built massive followings by challenging mainstream narratives and energising young conservatives. At the same time, they’ve become lightning rods for criticism, protest, and in some cases, real hostility. Beyond words, that strain has intensified. The attempt on Donald Trump's life during the 2024 election cycle served as a sobering reminder that political violence is still a reality today. It strengthened the perception among many CPAC attendees that conservative perspectives are not only discussed but also increasingly singled out.

Coming from Australia, the contrast is striking. Our political system, led by figures like far-left Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, feels more stable and less confrontational on the surface. But we’re not isolated from what’s happening globally.

The same cultural and political debates shaping America are making their way into Australian society through media, universities, and online spaces. The lesson from Dealey Plaza isn’t just about what happened to one president. It’s about what can happen when political differences stop being just differences and start becoming something more confronting.

CPAC, in that sense, is a response to that trend. It’s a place where people come together not just to talk politics, but to push back against western decline. Walking out of the museum, the world outside looked normal. But after standing in a place where everything changed in an instant, it’s hard not to wonder how close we might be to moments like that again and what role gatherings like CPAC play in shaping what comes next.

A Day at the Dallas Cowboys: An Aussie Perspective

The United States has no shortage of sporting legends. A culture of outdoorsmanship and rugged competitive individualism has created a broad spectrum of sporting achievement resulting in Olympic domination and custodianship of the largest and most valuable sport teams in the world.

The Global Explorers had a sample of this when we visited the Headquarters and Training Centre of the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys are the most valuable sports team in the world valued at $13 billion USD ($18.7 billion AUD) and the sheer extravagance of the building certainly reflected that from a beautiful rod lit chandelier in the lobby, endless floors of office space, a huge football training field and a private theatre with Italian leather seats.

All of that extravagance is of course not just for show and tell, but reflects a culture that strives for individual and institutional excellence. Our hosts explained the intense selection and training process not just for the players themselves, but the cheerleaders, coaches and other support staff. In an industry where so many aspire for so few positions, nothing but the very best will suffice.

By contrast, this culture of excellence has diminished back home in Australia. Whereas merit alone was once what was rewarded, today those in power prioritise DEI, participation trophies and striving for so called “social justice”. We Australians may pride ourselves on an egalitarian meritocratic culture, but that is not currently reflected by how those in power conduct themselves.

Doubtless among the Cowboys there is great diversity amongst the team and its top achievers. African American players such as the Playmaker Michael Irvin and legendary runner backs Emmit Smith and Herschel Walker epitomise the ability for sport to promote social mobility and achieve great things. Yet these players are not defined by their race. They do not carry vindictive agendas, kneel during the national anthem or use their platforms to promote hate. Instead, their accomplishments are a unifying inspiration for all Americans. Regardless of their differences, Americans of all stripes can come together to cheer for their favourite team and support Team USA abroad.

This social dynamic around sport is something sorely missing in Australia. Many of our sporting legends are defined by immutable characteristics like gender and race rather than by individual achievement. Many of our fellow Australians are ashamed of their own flag and anthem. Our governments won’t invest in sport leading to humiliating backdowns like the Commonwealth Games debacle in Victoria. Australia also has a culture of outdoorsmanship and rugged competitive individualism. The Dallas Cowboys have shown us how we can use these to strive only for the very best.

The Wall Street of the West: What Fort Worth's Stockyards Say About a Nation's Strength

I'm standing outside the Fort Worth Livestock Exchange reading a plaque when it hits me just how much was once moving through this place.

In 1893, Boston man Greenlief W. Simpson led a group of investors in purchasing the Fort Worth Union Stock Yards. As the company grew its connections across the country, it too reached overseas and supported the war effort, becoming the world’s largest livestock market.

With millions of livestock passing through, the Fort Worth Exchange became known as the “Wall Street of the West”.

Nothing caught my interest more while walking through the Fort Worth Stockyards than this. It showed the industry and strength the United States has long had.

The CPAC Global Explorers were taken on a guided tour up and down the main stretch of this historic district in Fort Worth, Texas. The main street was full of souvenir shops, leather goods stores and bars.

We took the opportunity to buy cowboy hats and belt buckles. Some tried their luck on the bucking bull, watched the cattle drive through the main street or even filmed their own short Western! No doubt inspired by the John Wayne museum down the street.

The Stockyards felt active, but not in the way it must have been. The plaque read that by the 1950s, local auctions were drawing business away from the Exchange, which led to the district gradually shifting from being a hub of cattle business to a significant part of the city's heritage. The industry itself continues today in Texas and across the Midwest.

The Stockyards are a brilliant, vibrant way to show and be proud of the history of the American cattle trade that forms part of the character of the nation.

Standing there, you could appreciate what this place represented and what brought it into being.

The Exchange building and the district around it were built on enterprise at speed and scale. Traders, investors and entire industries were centred around places like these.

I couldn't help but be reminded of Sovereign Hill back in Australia, the living museum of life in the gold rush boom town of Ballarat. This too is a period and place that formed the Australia we know today.

Being able to go to the Fort Worth Stockyards now, we’re not just seeing a preserved history, but the foundations of how the country built the strength it has today.

So now that we're heading into CPAC for the week, this trip has provided a strong backdrop for the current debates in the US - from rebuilding domestic industry to the cultural battles defining its future.

The NBA, Local Patriotism and Decentralised Federalism to Take Back Home

The Global Explorers happened to end up at what must have been the best match of the NBA season on Tuesday night. The Dallas Mavericks and the Golden State Warriors battled it out with a match tied almost all the way through, neither team taking a strong lead, right until the end of the game where the Golden State Warriors won 137-131, with extra time, a severe injury and two free throws in the final minutes.

Golden State Warriors guard Moses Moody was left lying for minutes after a failed dunk attempt caused a severe knee injury, eventually being carried off by medics. He had just returned from a sprain injury this match, but had been leading the Warriors this match with 23 points and 3 steals. A missed free throw by Moses Moody with just 2:23 on the clock compounded the excitement of the night, where every point had mattered as one team and then the other took the lead.

Hard to look past was Dallas Maverick Cooper Flagg, who achieved 32 points and 9 assists across the match. Hopefully he'll become one of the iconic NBA legends' names whose notoriety makes him known even Down Under.

However, if you place a group of 17 bright-eyed, hyper-politicised young Australians in the audience of the above game, it's hard not to make an observation. They were witnessing a prime example of local patriotism - something that feels merely nostalgic in Australia.

Earlier in the day, a local shop attendant in the 'mall' (read: shopping centre!) remarked, "You're in the best country… but even better, you're in the best State!" Texas merchandise was featured in every second gift shop. This seems an irony when in my home state of Queensland, local paraphernalia suddenly appears before State of Origin, disappearing to the back of shelves and closets a couple of days later.

When Australia federated in 1901, the States were wary to surrender their sovereignty. They recognised their unique strengths and interests. They curated a relatively short list of Commonwealth powers and tried to retain individualism.

Today's system of decentralised federalism, created through judicial activism and political laziness, has eroded our capacity for diversity between the States. We need to celebrate uniqueness and cultivate differences between the States and Territories so that we have something special again to be proud of (among many other important reasons!).

I look forward to returning home a prouder Queenslander and knowing that a group of 17 young people share a passion for each of their home States as well. I look forward to this creating an even better Australia. After all, the Global Explorers aren't here purely for sight-seeing, but also to be inspired and re-energised for creating waves back home. This was just one of the ripples of change coming.

Conservative Leadership We Can Get Behind

There's a lot riding on the next chapter for Australian conservatism.

CPAC Australia is proud to back Angus Taylor, Matt Canavan and Pauline Hanson as leaders who reflect genuine conservative values.

These are people we can move forward with.

Ultimately, it is up to every Australian voter to decide who earns their trust at the ballot box, which is how it should be.

Our hope is that all conservative parties will find common ground, work together, and keep their eyes on what matters most: Australia's future.

A Line in the Bondi Sand

There comes a moment when leadership is tested not by what is said, but by what has been tolerated.

What happened at Bondi was not an isolated act of hatred. It was the point at which two years of weak messaging from our leadership finally met reality. A line has now been drawn in the sand at Bondi, not by politicians, but by the Australian community that has witnessed an escalation in antisemitism while those in a position to strongly condemn it, looked away.

Since the October 7 attacks, Australia has experienced an unprecedented wave of antisemitic incidents. Some have been horrifying and impossible to ignore, synagogues attacked, bombs planted, and now a mass-casualty attack at a public Jewish gathering. But alongside these devastating events, have been relentless smaller acts of bigotry and hatred: threats, intimidation, abuse, vandalism, and harassment. Thousands of incidents which have become part of daily life for Jewish Australians.

This did not happen in a vacuum.

In the weeks and months after October 7, large pro-Palestinian marches were allowed to proceed where language crossed from protest into incitement. At the Sydney Opera House, just days after the massacre in Israel, crowds were heard chanting “where’s the Jews” and “gas the Jews”. Police were present, yet the protesters were allowed to continue with little condemnation from our Federal government and no consequences.

Australia already has laws against incitement and hate speech. But in the face of public slogans like “f* the Jews” they were not enforced. They were not enforced when people held up signs that accused Zionists of being neo-Nazis, and when there were calls for a “global intifada”. They were not enforced when over 600 Jewish creatives and academics were doxxed, they were not enforced on university campuses when activists entered lecture theatres chanting “Jews not allowed”, and they were not enforced when a Jewish academic was accosted in his office, verbally attacked and accused of being “guilty of genocide".

Instead our leaders contented themselves with carefully balanced statements that antisemitism has “no place in Australia”, while avoiding the harder task of calling out specific behaviour and specific movements.

We’ve seen something similar play out during COVID. Black Lives Matter marches were rubber-stamped during lockdowns, while other protests were shut down with force. The unspoken message is clear - some causes would be indulged, and others suppressed. The same indulgence has been evident here.

Even acknowledgement of a Palestinian State, coming as it did at a crucial and sensitive moment during peace talk negotiations - whatever the diplomatic intent - was received by some as a political signal, a licence to attack at a time when antisemitic intimidation was already well underway.

Words matter, silence also matters, but courage matters most. Anthony Albanese, Penny Wong, Tony Burke, and the entire Labor government have failed us through a woeful lack of courage. Bondi has now forced a reckoning. It should mark the end of us accepting glib statements from mealy-mouthed politicians and the beginning of decisive action.

You love your country, make your voice heard... loudly! It's time to take back what it means to be "Australian" from those who wish to destroy it.

I found out about CPAC last year when I attended a book launch with Liz Truss and was pleasantly surprised to hear also hear a speech from Tony Abbott. I was happy to find a community in Australia for like minded individuals who share conservative beliefs and values. I' ve observed a fear among conservatives to speak out for risk of being cancelled and been attacked en masse by outspoken activists. The cancellation of Peter Ridd really concerned me, as he was a voice for sanity in the university structure. The cancellation of Katherine Deves made me think about the future direction of our country if women are not allowed to speak up for other women.

While not every conservative agrees on every issue, we share a lot of common ground. Hopefully we can contribute interesting and thought-provoking discussion in a fair and open-minded safe environment. My aim as NSW events manager is to make people feel welcome, connected, supported and part of a larger community of like-minded people. I look forward to meeting you and hope we can provide a community in which to feel respected, heard, understood and appreciated.

Here at CPAC, we're pumped to announce that CPAC has officially formed our first three state-based organising committees in Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria. This is a major step forward in making CPAC a truly national and uncancelable force.

Each committee is led by a new State Events Manager who will work with the other committee members to articulate our values through grassroots local events, speaker tours, rallies, and more - all the things we know conservatives across Australia are calling for.

Expanding our footprint is how we engage our communities and unite our voices to defend liberty and opportunity for all. Given the prospect of six more years of a hard-left political agenda, we believe now is the time to act .

I'm here to stand up and lead the charge of Victorian conservatives. For too long, I've seen a growing disconnect, a feeling of being unheard amongst those who hold traditional values and believe in common-sense governance. I feel it's crucial to call out to and unite the conservatives of Victoria, to show them they have a natural home here at CPAC; a place where our voices can converge, where our ideas can be shared and our principles championed.

It’s time for the silent majority to take a stand. We can no longer be idle as the Left drives this state down the path of authoritarianism. Our freedoms are being eroded, and the values that have made Victoria great are being undermined. I'm determined to embolden our people to take a stand for the fundamental principles of freedom and democracy. I have dedicated my life to this very mission: to protect our state from harmful ideologies, to protect our people from policies that stifle their potential, and to stand up for the precious freedom that underpins our society. How to Be Strategic This Election

Your Effort Matters

With the federal election on the horizon, I know a lot of CPAC supporters are asking: what can I actually do? Where should I put my time, energy, and effort to make the biggest difference?

It’s a fair question. The temptation during election season is to throw yourself into a campaign or cause without stepping back and thinking strategically. But if we want real impact, we have to be smart about how we get involved.

Another question I'm asking is: what do you want out of this election?

If your goal is a Coalition win, it’s worth being honest about where your effort will actually help bring that about. That means focusing on the eight or so marginal seats that will decide the election, not volunteering in a safe seat or an unwinnable one. That kind of work may feel good, but it won’t shift the result.

Maybe you’re feeling disillusioned with the Coalition and would rather support a minor party. That’s your call, and minor parties can play an important role in keeping pressure on the majors. But again, be strategic. Some minor parties may hand out how-to-vote cards that preference Labor or the Greens above the Coalition. As an example, Clive Palmer has announced that Trumpet of Patriots will be putting all incumbents last on their HTV’s – and that includes sitting Coalition members.

So be aware that if you’re handing out flyers at a polling booth, you could be helping elect the very people you’re hoping to replace. If you’re active with a party, it’s something you might even help influence from within.

In short, think about your end goal and work backwards.

Just to be clear, CPAC Australia does not endorse any political party, nor do we tell people how to vote. But we are happy assist organisations that are fighting for the issues that matter to conservatives and liberty-minded Australians.

We're taking CPAC across the country!

This week we held our first organising committee meetings with groups from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. We had a great turnout - people who, like you, want to see more conservatives gathering together in their cities. These are people to whom 'values matter', people who are prepared to speak out and won't be bullied into silence.

And this is just the beginning!

CPAC is expanding across the country - not only will we host our flagship CPAC Conference in Brisbane on September 20-21, we are also touring high-profile international speakers to multiple cities later this year. We already have two major speakers confirmed, and we'll be announcing more soon once we have the details in place.

To make this happen, we need you.

We need organisers, venue coordinators, people with marketing experience and event-day volunteers. It doesn't matter if you have run events before (although that helps!) - what really matters is your willingness to step up and help us make a difference.

Cancel Culture Pushed CPAC to Brisbane

The conservative vibe will keep us for another year

Holding a conference sounds simple, right? Well, not if it's CPAC. From the very outset, CPAC has been subject to the most aggressive and egregious form of cancel culture.

When we started CPAC in 2019, little did we know the lengths that the "left" would go to try and shut us down. The current Prime Minister but then opposition leader, Anthony Albanese, described CPAC as a " parade of right wing nutters ". Labor senator Kristina Keneally described CPAC as a “ talkfest of hate ” and Penny Wong said " We do not need to import its (CPAC's) antisemitism, white supremacy and bigotry to Australia ". During the conference, Antifa protested CPAC , shutting down streets in the Sydney CBD as they tried to shut down CPAC itself.

Protests and parliamentary speeches are all forms of free speech, and while we laugh at the drivel these authoritarians espouse, we defend their right to speak it. But where we must draw the line is when government power is harnessed to shut down political opponents.

The current Attorney General, but then shadow AG, Mark Dreyfus, sought to harness that power by secretly backgrounding officers in Christian Porter's Attorney General's department to use the Foreign Influence Transparency Scheme laws against CPAC, Tony Abbott and me. That eventually led to a threat of jail time against me and a nearly three-year legal battle in the High Court defending our right to free speech. CPAC Sponsor and supporter, the Institute of Public Affairs , performed great work exposing the existence of over 1,300 documents held by the AG's department with my name, CPAC's and other CPAC speakers' names on them. Deep state surveillance at its worst.

There was even a time when I prepared my children to deal with the possibility that their father might be sent to jail if he did not submit to demands that he could not meet. It was an upsetting time, to say the least.

Is it easy to run a conference? No, not if it's conservative.

In NSW, CPAC is regularly harassed by the "events " division of the NSW Police. From what I c an gather, their job is to approach conservative conference holders at the last minute and demand that outrageous "security" charges be paid to protect patrons from protesters. If one refuses to pay, they will invariably threaten to shut down the conference. I paid once but never again. We have yet to be shut down, but the threat is ever-present regardless of whether protesters turn up.

Why am I sharing this with you? Well, I know that thousands of CPAC supporters in Sydney miss the conference being held there, and I wanted to explain why it's so difficult to be there at this time. The suffocating political correctness and institutionalised cancel culture just make Sydney too difficult (and dangerous). So we will be holding CPAC in Brisbane again in 2025 (19-20th September).

Queensland has proven itself to be Australia’s most conservative state, almost like our own version of Florida. The recently elected conservative government has led the way in pushing back against controversial gender treatment by pausing puberty blockers. It is also the home of opposition leader Peter Dutton and outspoken Nationals senator Matt Canavan. The last CPAC conference in Brisbane was an great success, and this year will be no exception.

Still, we have every intention of bringing CPAC back to Sydney - possibly as soon as next year. The demand is there, and we know how important it is to have a strong conservative presence in Australia's biggest city. While the challenges remain, we are committed to finding a way forward and making CPAC Sydney a reality again.

That said, CPAC cannot be just one big event a year. It is time to expand beyond Brisbane and take CPAC to every major city in Australia . Our vision is to build a nationwide movement, ensuring that conservatives in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth do not miss out on the world-class speakers and momentum we bring.

This is where you come in. To make this vision a reality, we need strong, committed conservatives to help us bring CPAC to their cities. That is why we are launching state organising committees —local teams that will help coordinate events, secure venues, and build a movement in their own backyard.

CPAC US Recap: What Our Explorers Took Away

After an unforgettable experience at CPAC US, the feedback from our Global Explorers speaks for itself. This wasn’t just about watching Trump, Vance, Milei, Musk, and Shapiro take the stage—it was about being in the room, forming connections, and bringing that momentum home.

One of our Global Explorers, Calista Clements, summed it up best: “CPAC reminded us what we are fighting for, not just what we are fighting against.”

Living in Australia, it can feel like we are distant from the global fight for conservative values. But CPAC US was a powerful reminder that we are not alone. The Deep State Scurries Abroad

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC); is host to the most well-known names and accredited brains within conservatism globally. With thanks to the CPAC Australia organisation and entrepreneur Steve Baxter, I was fortunate to be a sponsored guest at the 2025 CPAC USA conference in Washington DC. As a political commentator and analyst this gave me the opportunity to step out of the figurative lecture hall and into the arena of US politics.

With speakers such as Nigel Farage, Elon Musk, Vice President JD Vance, all the way up to the standing President of the United States; Donald J Trump, any conservative would be blown away by the proximity to this living wisdom, as was I. However, as I left the conference after hearing so many incredible words; an unexpected statement from a speaker rang in my ears.

Mike Benz; a former official with the US Department of State and current director for ‘Freedom Online’, a “free speech watchdog organisation”, spoke to the unconsidered dangers associated with the disempowerment of USAID. While there has been celebration of this milestone, Mr Benz highlighted that the powers formerly unified through the USAID, will be seeking unity internationally – forming a “coalition to try to use the weaponised powers of foreign governments”.

“We've seen heads of state and people from almost all populated continents coming to this conference to say that we are together, and the opposition is going to be doing the same on the other side.” An image was captured vividly in my mind with his metaphor of sharks and minnow fish; while a school of minnows combined can appear capable of overpowering a shark, what happens when these sharks coalesce? This really emphasised the dangers we face when conservative bodies are internationally disconnected but inversely; highlighted the immense power available to the conservative movement when aligned.

Whilst these deep state cockroaches are scuttling for financial cover and positions in other affluent nations, Benz challenged the CPAC audience to “bring the whole world up with us” in order to squash them.

As I return home to Australia, I am filled with immense gratitude to have been one of the few honoured to attending such an incredible event and fortunately my eyes are now opened to the dangers of complacency. Whilst we reside in the Eden of Australia; so many miles from the United States, we are not immune to the powers of the deep state. Cockroaches may not swim but they sure do hide; thus the urgency of our absolute vigilance.

The CPAC US Experience: Global Explorers Take Washington

After an unforgettable week at CPAC US, I’m heading home with our CPAC Australia delegation, and let me tell you—this trip was something else. From the moment we landed, it was non-stop action, networking, and learning, and I couldn’t be prouder of the young Australians who came along as part of our CPAC Global Explorers Program.

We kicked things off with a private tour of the US Capitol. Walking the halls of American democracy, seeing where history is made—it was an amazing experience. But that was just the beginning.

Before CPAC officially kicked off, United International members of CPAC gathered, including Liz Truss, to discuss the global conservative movement. It was a powerful reminder that we’re part of something much bigger than just Australia—conservatives everywhere are fighting the same battles, and we’re winning ground.

Before we knew it, CPAC was in full swing.

Me and Warren doing our thing on stage was a blast, but let’s talk about the real highlights. Javier Milei electrified the crowd, Megyn Kelly took no prisoners, Pam Bondi called out the establishment, and Elon Musk made waves. And, of course, the main event—Donald Trump bringing the house down.

But if there was one moment that absolutely stole the show, it was Milei handing his famous chainsaw over to the DOGE-master himself, Elon Musk. And where was the Aussie delegation? Front and centre, taking in the wildest CPAC moment in years. One of the Explorers summed it up perfectly as “Probably the coolest thing I have ever seen in my life.”

Beyond the speeches, the networking opportunities were next-level. Our group spent time with Ben Shapiro and Matt Walsh from The Daily Wire, rubbed shoulders with major conservative figures, and even got a cheeky shoutout from Benny Johnson on stage—“Look at these crazy Australians, who let them in?”

Then came the Reagan Dinner, where the Aussie delegation strategically lined up early to get the best seats (always a smart move). But the night didn’t end there—because the real party was the exclusive Aussie after-party. Word spread fast, security was tight, and people were literally queuing up to get in. A testament to the impact CPAC Australia is making on the global stage.

Beyond all the speeches, meetings, and events, this trip was about the future. Watching our young Australians soak up the experience, build relationships, and get inspired made it clear—the conservative movement in Australia is in good hands.

How Are We Letting This Happen to Our Kids?

It's Up to Every Parent to Stand Up and Push Back

I believe there is little doubt among the mums and dads of Australia that gender ideology has gone too far. Last week I talked about the weaponisation of the law against women who are defended women’s spaces. Ironically laws put in place to protect women from domestic violence, have been used against them to silence criticism of men in women’s sports and women’s changerooms.

But there is an even more sinister side to this movement and that is one that affects our most precious resource – our children.

The final report of the Cass Review revealed some disturbing truths about the standard of gender care in the UK leading to the closure of the controversial Tavistock Centre in 2023. Since then concerns have heightened around the world leading to President Trump signing an Executive Order “ protecting children from chemical and surgical mutilation.”

Now in Queensland, the state government has ordered an immediate pause on prescribing puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to new underage patients. Why? Because allegations have surfaced about dubious gender treatments being carried out in Far North Queensland, and even the government couldn’t ignore them any longer.

This is what happens when ideology replaces medical ethics. Doctors are fast-tracking kids onto life-altering drugs, locking them into a path of permanent medicalisation—a path many later regret. And until now, no one in power has dared to question it.

Health Minister Tim Nicholls says the pause is justified on safety grounds. That’s an understatement. These drugs stop normal development in its tracks, shutting down puberty, reducing bone density, and in many cases, leading to irreversible sterility. But don’t just take my word for it. Countries like the UK , Sweden , and Finland have already walked back these treatments, after realising they were harming more children than they were helping.

The pressure is finally mounting here too. At a federal level, Health Minister Mark Butler has launched a national review of gender treatments for minors. This came after 100+ prominent Australians called on PM Albanese to hold an inquiry and halt gender interventions for kids—a campaign spearheaded by Women’s Forum Australia .

This sounds like the whole house of cards might come crashing down soon, but sadly we’re not there yet.

In Australia, the mainstream media haven’t quite caught up, as protests against the Queensland are portrayed as a campaign for freedom, justice and equality, and our peak medical bodies – who should know better – are calling for the Queensland decision to be reversed.

Not only that, the national review will drag on for years, with the interim advice due in mid-2026 and the final report three years from now. Meanwhile, how many kids will be put on experimental drugs? How many young women will wake up at 18 with no breasts, no reproductive system, and no way back?

Pauline Hanson recently tabled her own motion for a more speedy enquiry – the bill was defeated by Labor, Greens and independent senators, but importantly 18 Coalition senators supported her motion, putting pressure on Dutton to change his stance which until now has been lukewarm.

In the United States, Donald Trump has taken a clear stand, declaring that there are two genders—male and female. His administration has already moved to ban government funding for transitioning minors. If America can immediate take action, why can’t we?

We’re at a cross-roads where it’s every parent’s responsibility – Dad’s too - to stand up and say enough. If we don’t, we risk raising a generation of children who were permanently altered because adults were too afraid to push back against an activist agenda.

CPAC is fighting to get these issues on the agenda, but we can’t do it alone. Parents, medical professionals, and concerned Australians are waking up to what’s happening, and momentum is finally building—but we need to keep the pressure on. The activists pushing these treatments aren’t slowing down, and neither can we.

Weaponising the Law: How Critics of Trans Ideology are Being Punished

If you ever needed proof that trans activism has become a tool to silence women, look no further than the Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) issued against Kirralie Smith . Kirralie has been campaigning as a spokesperson for Binary - a grassroots organisation pushing back against harmful gender ideology and promoting “the biological reality that there are two complementary sexes”. Radical!

Her activism has involved calling out trans-women in women’s sports as well protecting women’s public spaces including change-rooms and bathrooms. Now, a law designed to protect people from violence has instead been hijacked and weaponised by a biological male to silence a woman fighting for women’s rights.

Trans activists routinely engage in vicious attacks on women’s rights activists on social media. The online attacks and abuse people like J.K. Rowling face, is relentless. And it’s not just online. Kellie Jay-Keen has been spat on, doused with soup and verbally abused in public. Somehow these abusive and violent trans activists escape scrutiny.

The weaponisation of law inflicted on Kirralie Smith isn’t an isolated case. When women speak out about the importance of single-sex spaces—whether in sports, bathrooms, or changing rooms—they’re met with legal threats, harassment, and censorship.

Take Sal Grover, founder of Giggle, a female-only app designed to connect women. She found herself in a legal battle after refusing to allow a trans-identified male to access her platform. The courts ruled against her, raising serious questions about whether Australian law is now actively working against women’s rights.

The Sex Discrimination Act was enacted protect women’s rights. In the current climate, could this same law be twisted to punish people for using terms like “trans woman” or “woman” in a way that doesn’t align with activists’ demands? These questions aren’t hypothetical anymore.

Some people dismiss the debates around men in women’s sports and bathrooms as just a “culture war” issue, but the reality is that women-only public bathrooms were a major feminist win. Before the 19th century public bathrooms were restricted to men, limiting the types of jobs women could take. Women’s bathrooms played a crucial role in breaking social and political barriers allowing women to step into public life.

How ironic that women in the public sphere, who are seeking to preserve these hard-won rights, are now being punished for doing so. The simple act of saying “women need their own bathrooms” is somehow controversial.

There is some hope, though. We’re seeing pushback against trans ideology - in the United States, Donald Trump has drawn a line in the sand, recently declaring that there are two genders—male and female. Whether that stance influences policy shifts here in Australia remains to be seen, however there are some early signs that for children at least, our current policies on gender treatments will come under scrutiny.

Most Australians probably don’t care that a man wants to wear a dress and live as a woman. But that doesn’t mean it’s OK to erode women’s hard won rights and freedoms. They shouldn’t have to fight these battles all over again.

Australia Day is almost upon us and millions of Australians look forward to a long weekend and a day of celebrating what brings us together and what makes our country great. As CPAC Chairman Warren Mundine reminds us every year - there’s so much for us to be proud of - so we take the opportunity to embrace that and celebrate!

For countless Australians, especially those who became citizens on this special day, Australia Day holds deep meaning. It’s a moment to honour their journey and welcome them into the fabric of our nation. Let’s not forget how many new Australians are made citizens each year on January 26—it’s a testament to the values and opportunities that make this country so special.

Trump’s Inauguration and the Cultural Shift in the West

As Donald Trump takes the oath of office, it’s clear that his presidency is already reshaping the cultural and political landscape—not just in America but across the Western world. Perhaps Trump himself isn’t the cause of this shift, but he’s definitely the accelerator. Forces pushing back against progressive overreach have been growing for years, and Trump’s boldness has given them momentum.

That said, it would be a mistake to see him as a messiah figure. Trump’s actions, like launching his $TRUMP memecoin, are a reminder of how unpredictable and volatile he can be. In six months, the realities of governing will sink in. We may see the typical challenges—resignations, internal dramas, and shifting loyalties—that come with his unique leadership style. So while conservatives have plenty to celebrate we need to keep level heads and ground our expectations.

Observing the US campaigning, election and inauguration processes brings to mind the stark contrast with our parliamentary based processes here in Australia. Over there it’s all about the individual - their personality, charisma and their willingness to make bold statements and take risks. Even Barack Obama broke the mould in his way when pushing through Obamacare despite resistance from all quarters.

These figures can push boundaries and make bold statements that would never fly in Australia. Here, elections are like electing a committee—structured, measured and pretty bland by comparison.

Interestingly, Trump’s election seems to have resonated here in Australia, even influencing attitudes toward Australia Day. This day, often marked by heated debate, feels different this year. Supporters of Australia Day seem more willing to voice their pride and brush aside the usual negativity. Could this newfound confidence be inspired by Trump’s unapologetic style? Perhaps it is.

Warren Mundine to Contest Liberal Preselection in Bradfield

CPAC Chairman Warren Mundine has officially put his hand up for Liberal Party preselection in the electorate of Bradfield following Paul Fletcher’s announcement that he will not contest the next election.

Fletcher, a self-described moderate, had positioned himself as a centrist, arguing that to beat the Teals, the Liberals must move in their direction. Warren has built his career on doing the opposite— standing firm on principles , not bending to political trends. His ability to cut through media spin and speak directly to Australians is well known, and his impact on the national debate is undeniable.

Warren was one of the most influential figures in the Voice referendum, helping to shift national sentiment from 70 percent in favour to 60 percent opposed. His leadership changed the course of the debate. Now, he is bringing that same conviction to the political arena, making it clear that he won’t be swayed by factions or backroom deals.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Warren put it simply: He has the courage to fight for his convictions. He isn’t beholden to factions or hidden agendas. What you see is what you get.

The preselection vote takes place this weekend, January 18, and however the race plays out, his influence on the national conversation is undeniable.

What the Social Media Ban Says About Who’s Really in Charge

Christmas is nearly here and everywhere Australian families are gearing up for the big day when they can focus on connection, tradition and what really matters.

For conservatives especially, the holiday season is a reminder of just how important family is - not just for celebrating festive traditions, but as the foundational bedrock of a strong society, and a place where kids learn values like responsibility and respect.

The government’s new ban on social media for under-16’s threatens to undermine that foundation.

The ban has stirred up a lot of debate - and rightly so. The reasoning behind it is to tackle concerns about the negative impact of social media on teenagers, an issue raised by Jonathan Haidt in his book The Anxious Generation . He argues that platforms like Instagram and TikTok have contributed to rising anxiety and depression in young people. If he is right, that’s a big deal - but is a government ban the way to solve this issue?

Many are asking this question. Can referring to our values help conservatives conclude the role of the state on this and similar issues?

At its core this ban is about who is in the best position to make decisions for kids: parents or the government. Conservative values tell us that it's families - not bureaucrats - who are best placed to make decisions about what’s right for their kids. It’s true that not all families are equipped with these skills, and abuse does happen - but our legal system already deals with these situations. The vast majority of parents can handle decisions around how much social media access their kids get - without the government looking over their shoulders.

That aside, there’s the issue of the unintended consequences of well-meaning policy which we have seen happen only too often. Ronald Reagan nailed it when he joked that the nine most terrifying words in the English language are: “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help”—the results can be messy. Indeed the results WILL be messy with the U-16 social media ban.

Let’s also not forget social media isn’t all bad. Communicating via social media is where teens learn, create, and connect in today’s world—whether we like it or not. My children have maintained friendships from previous schools, which would have been difficult without social media.

The ban could push kids into unsafe, unregulated corners of the internet or encourage them to resort to dishonest tactics like lying about their age. How soon before shady characters start offering our kids ways around the ban? How do you feel about that?

Denying access also risks putting them behind in crucial digital literacy and social skills. Instead of banning it outright, shouldn’t we help families teach kids how to use social media responsibly? Shouldn't families learn how to deal with these tools together? Encouraging families to deal with issues and make decisions on social media access is how we preserve the balance between freedom and responsibility—two values conservatives hold dear.

The re-election of President Donald Trump in the United States is a clear sign of cultural pushback from everyday people—those tired of being dismissed or ignored. It reflects a growing movement that’s challenging progressive overreach, and this shift is already being felt here in Australia.

Should Australia go nuclear?

There’s no doubt about it – nuclear power is a hot topic. And with good reason – it has the potential to help solve many of the world’s energy problems. But there are also a lot of misconceptions about nuclear power. Take a few minutes to consider the benefits of nuclear energy, address the big questions, and discover why Australia should consider investing in nuclear power to help with baseload energy.

“Nuclear is the safest way to make electricity.” - Michael Shellenberger

The eight words in the above quote are bound to trigger climate activists across the great southern land. Still, educated climate change activists will understand the solution is not to live with less energy, but to embrace better technology, which includes nuclear power.

Known by many as an environmental agitator who attacks leftist sacred cows, Michael Shellenberger is someone who isn’t afraid of speaking the truth. Poking conventional progressive positions has been his calling card - first defending nuclear energy against groups trying to shut it down, then arguing that climate change won’t be as bad as most believe.

“Only nuclear energy can lift all humans out of poverty while preventing dangerous levels of global warming.” - Michael Shellenberger

Michael Shellenberger believes using nuclear energy is the only true panacea when it comes to both addressing global warming and addressing the energy crises we will continue to live through. The French and the Swedes are good examples. Both countries built nuclear reactors in the 1970s and 1980s to meet the Green New Deal’s alleged climate goals. 95% of Sweden’s electricity in 2017 was generated from zero-carbon sources, with nuclear power and hydroelectricity accounting for 42% and 41%, respectively. Nuclear and hydroelectric power together made up 72% and 10% of France’s zero-carbon electricity. Look at Germany. As a result of Germany’s nuclear plant closures, it will have spent $580 billion on renewable energy and related equipment by 2025. In exchange for its “energy transition,” Germany will get 50% higher electricity prices, flat emissions, and an electricity supply that is ten times more carbon-intensive than France’s.

Three things changed Michael’s thinking about nuclear energy. In 2005, Stewart Brand, one of the most famous U.S. environmentalists, came out as pro-nuclear. This stance shook him and made him reconsider his beliefs about nuclear energy. Secondly, he realized a few years later that solar and wind alone weren’t enough to power the world. It is highly regressive and adversely affects the poor more than the rich, both directly and indirectly since they make electricity more expensive and unreliable. After reading reports from the United Nations and World Health Organization, he was shocked to discover how few people died in Chernobyl. Finally, his perception of nuclear changed once he realized it wasn’t what he thought it was. He began wondering why we needed renewable energy if whole countries like France could run on nuclear power.

Why was nuclear never adopted in Australia?

The Australian government has discussed building nuclear power plants for many years but has never executed a concrete plan. Even though Australia holds 31% of the world’s uranium reserves, it has always been cheaper to use coal, gas, and oil for electricity. There is only one nuclear reactor in Australia, at Lucas Heights, south of Sydney, and it produces mostly low-level waste.

Why has the idea been revived now?

It seems that nuclear power can resolve a political dilemma. Because of its lack of fossil fuel dependence, it is considered a fast way to deliver zero-carbon power. Some argue that nuclear power can provide “dispatchable power” while still paying high salaries while “firming” up the grid at the same time, which is fitting because moving away from fossil fuels will hit working-class regions hardest.

Do the costs and benefits make sense?

There have been periodic attempts by governments to establish a nuclear power industry. A royal commission in South Australia in 2015 laid the groundwork for the rest of the nation. In 2019, the federal government launched an inquiry.

Both reports agreed that “next generation” reactors showed promise, but any project would only go ahead with broad public support, and there’s the rub. If people aren’t willing to embrace nuclear energy as a possibility for Australia’s energy problems, then no nuclear-based project will get past the discussion phase.

Three reasons for nuclear power in Australia

Emissions-free

Nuclear power produces no emissions, and nuclear reactors produce no greenhouse gas emissions during operation. The World Nuclear Association states, “if all current nuclear plants were replaced by fossil fuel plants, global CO₂ emissions would increase by about two gigatonnes a year – about the same as all the world’s cars produce.”

Small footprint

There is a minimal footprint associated with nuclear power plants. Despite its large size, the nuclear reactor is only a small part of the nuclear power plant. Moreover, nuclear reactors do not require large amounts of land to store fuel since they don’t burn fossil fuels.

Baseload energy

It is possible to provide Australia’s baseload energy with nuclear power. For the grid to function, there must be enough baseload energy generated. Because nuclear power plants can operate without interruption for long periods of time, they are ideal for providing baseload energy.

Nuclear power has a lot of potential. And with the right policies in place, nuclear power could play a significant role in helping Australia meet its energy needs.
